GSSI Approves ‘Continued Recognition’ of BAP Finfish & Crustacean Farm Standards, Salmon Farm Standards

Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) on Oct. 28 announced that the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification program has been recommended for continued recognition for its Finfish & Crustacean Farm Standards (Issue 2.4) and its Salmon Farm Standards (Issue 2.3) following the completion of GSSI’s Monitoring of Continued Alignment procedure. Best Aquaculture Practices First Aquaculture Certification Scheme to Earn GSSI Recognition

The Global Aquaculture Alliance’s (GAA) Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) is the world’s first aquaculture certification program to be recognized by the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI), GAA and GSSI announced jointly on Oct. 4. The GSSI Steering Board has approved the recognition, determining that the two-star certification against the BAP Finfish and Crustacean Farm Standards and BAP Salmon Farm Standards are in alignment with all Essential Components of the GSSI Global Benchmark Tool, independently verifying alignment with the FAO Technical Guidelines on Aquaculture Certification. GSSI Benchmark Committee Finds BAP Salmon, Finfish/Crustacean Farm Standards In Alignment, Report In Public Consultation Phase

The Global Aquaculture Alliance’s Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) third-party aquaculture certification program is one step closer to becoming recognized by the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI). The process began in December 2015 when BAP applied for GSSI recognition, step one of a seven-step process to determine whether the BAP Finfish and Crustacean Farm Standards and BAP Salmon Farm Standards are in alignment with all Essential Components of the GSSI Global Benchmark Tool.
