FEDEACUA, Colombia To Pilot Draft Biosecurity Area Management Standard

The Global Aquaculture Alliance and Federación Colombiana De Acuicultores (FEDEACUA) are delighted to announce the Best Aquaculture Practices’ first pilot of the draft BAP Biosecurity Area Management Standards. FEDEACUA, the Colombian federation of aquaculture, has asked that Reservoir Betania tilapia farmers undergo the pilot and implement the draft BAP Biosecurity Area Management Standards. The standard lays out how farmers and other entities within a defined productive aquaculture area can best work together to prevent or mitigate threats from disease. Improved Farming Practices Responsible For Colombia’s Rising Tilapia Exports?

Improved farming practices are at least partially responsible for an 11 percent increase in Colombia’s tilapia exports to the U.S. market this year. Colombia’s Small Farmers Recognized For Achieving BAP Certification

In support of the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) third-party certification program, Jairo Amezquita, aquaculture consultant of the Americas region for U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC), presented BAP certificates to the Colombian farmers selected to receive training and financial support. Amezquita has been a key player in ensuring that Colombia’s farmers receive the training and financial support necessary to apply for the BAP certification to comply with local and international market requirements since USSEC and the Federación Colombiana De Acuicultores (FEDEACUA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) early this year.
