BAP Milestone: 2,000th Aquaculture Facility Certified

  The industry-leading Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) third-party certification program has reached a milestone, surpassing the 2,000-facility mark. There are now more than 2,000 BAP-certified processing plants, farms, hatcheries and feed mills in 33 countries and six continents. Administered by the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA), the BAP program is growing by leaps and bounds, more than doubling in size in the past two years, from about 700 facilities at the end of 2015 to 1,500-plus facilities by the end of 2016 to 1,850 facilities at the end of 2017. Number of BAP-Certified Facilities Tops 1,700

Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) added 273 new facilities to the third-party certification program through the first three-quarters of 2017, bringing the total number of BAP-certified aquaculture farms, processing plants, hatcheries and feed mills to 1,737 worldwide, the Global Aquaculture Alliance announced in mid-October. Of those 273 new facilities, 53 are processing plants, 172 are farms, 24 are hatcheries and 24 are feed mills. Shrimp farms (93) and salmon farms (53) represented the majority of the 172 farms added to the BAP program in the first nine months of 2017. RAS Seriola Farm Applies For BAP Certification

Kingfish Zeeland in the Netherlands has applied for Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification. If certified, Kingfish Zeeland would be the first seriola farm to attain BAP certification. The company raises yellowtail kingfish (Seriola lalandi), which is also known as hiramasa or Pacific yellowtail, in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) in the Province of Zeeland, using water from the Oosterschelde marine estuary, a Natura 2000 nature reserve. If certified, Kingfish Zeeland would also be the first RAS farm to attain BAP certification. Fifty-One Facilities Join BAP Program In January

The number of Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP)-certified facilities continues to grow, falling one facility shy of the 1,600 mark at the end of January. Fifty-one facilities joined the BAP third-party aquaculture certification program in January, bringing the total to 1,599 BAP-certified processing plants, farms, hatcheries and feed mills worldwide, the Global Aquaculture Alliance has announced. BAP Program Grew 47 Percent In 2016

The number of Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP)-certified facilities jumped 47 percent in 2016, the Global Aquaculture Alliance announced on Feb. 6. The third-party aquaculture certification program ended 2016 with 1,559 BAP-certified processing plants, farms, hatcheries and feed mills, up from 1,058 BAP-certified facilities at the end of 2015.
